What Are Club Sports?

A club sport is a registered student organization that is formed by students who share a common interest in their respective sports activity. Club sports provide students the opportunity to compete at various levels in practices, tournaments and intercollegiate competition. The success and strength of the club depends on the student leadership, commitment and involvement of the club members. The Club Sports Program will give assistance, guidance, and resources for the clubs to operate successfully.

Who can be a Member of a Club Sport?

Club sports participants must be recognized as UConn students (full or part-time), faculty or staff. Club membership must also be approved by individual club constitutions as well as their affiliated governing bodies.

How do I join a Team?

Over 1,200 student-athletes participate and compete on the club sports teams that are offered at UConn. If you are interested in joining a team or want more information please contact the team representatives, which can be found in the Team Directory.

Clubs compete at various levels of competition so some teams hold tryouts while others are open to all interested participants. The Club Sports Office requires that new team members are on the roster and have handed in their 3 player forms before they are allowed to compete.

How much are team dues?

Dues vary for each club sport team. Most teams receive funding from both Club Sports and Student Government, but it does not cover all expenses. Factors that influence the amount of dues include the nature of the sport (equipment, facility time etc.), the number of roster members, travel expenses and the amount of fundraising done by the club.

Who do the teams compete against?

Teams compete against other club sports teams from different universities throughout the region. If teams are successful within the region they can qualify to compete at national tournaments depending on the sport and governing body.

How do I start a new Club?

If the sport you are interested in is not currently offered as a Club Sport you can go through a process to apply for Club Sports status. For more information please read the How To Guide - Becoming a Club SportPDF Icon
